was here in PNG as an AVI (Australian Volunteer) for 2 years, teaching at a Catholic girls high school just outside of Moresby.

No fertility symbol I'm afraid. The maho (yam) is just her clans symbol. The yam is one of our staples and those with yam gardens are regarded highly as good providers.
